After entering the Royal Conservatory of Liège at the age of 16, Hughes Kolp obtains the Premier Prix de Guitare in 1993 under the supervision of Gonzales and Maria Mohino, then, in 1996, he obtains the Premier Prix de Flûte Traversière and the Diplôme Supérieur de Musique de Chambre. The musician then refines his art with Odaïr Assad at the Royal Conservatory of Mons and also obtains a Diplôme Supérieur de Guitare in 1997.
Winner of several Belgian and foreign competitions (includ- ing Dexia Classics), Hughes Kolp regularly performs as soloist with different ensembles and orchestras (Philharmonic Orchestra of Liege, Ictus, Bl!ndman, Romanian State Orchestra, Chamber Orchestra of Wallonia, Brabants Orkest of Eindhoven) but he also participates inside diverse musical formations with which he records and performs on tours and at festivals [these formations include the Ensemble Musiques Nouvelles (since 1996), the jazz group Danza Quartet of Jan Rzewski (since 2004) and the Alki Guitar Trio of Magali Rischette and Adrien Brogna (since 2008)].
Strongly concerned with the music of his time, Hughes Kolp devotes a huge part of his work to it. As such, he is part of the programme of the festival Ars Musica in 2008 where he performs a work by Claude Ledoux which is dedicated to himself (Zap’s init).
Hughes Kolp has often been invited to TV programmes of the RTBF (Belgian Francophone Radio and Television) and he has worked on multiple records in his name, including a soloist record (Ritmata, label G.H.A., 2003).
After having been parttime lecturer for the class of Odaïr Assad at the Royal Conservatory of Mons from 1997 to 2005 and lecturer at the IMEP (Superior Institute of Music and Pedagogy of Namur), Hughes Kolp is, since 2005, professor at the Royal Conservatory of Liege.
